The process of starting Nourishing Business Solutions was quick and short; however, the process of thinking about starting the business was long and slow. I had always dreamed of starting my own business but felt as if that dream was not possible due to lack of startup funding. I would spend my driving time thinking and praying about my future business and what all I wanted to accomplish through it. I would spend time also discouraging myself by thinking that I couldn’t start NBS without an investor. Boy was I wrong!
One day I messaged a friend from high school and told her that I had noticed her graphic design work and really loved it. We got to talking and I mentioned how I was in marketing and was considering starting my own business soon.
That presented the first big opportunity. She informed me that she had a relative who needed social media marketing help and was looking to hire someone to manage the accounts. I jumped on the opportunity to go ahead and get my business established and then my friend’s relative became my first official client.
I’ve come to the realization that often times, God has huge plans for us and the only thing holding us back are lies we tell ourselves that stem from insecurities. I have been focusing much of my recent attention to defeating those lies and to continually saying “yes” when God calls me to bigger and better, yet scarier, things. Going out on a limb is the only way to reach the fruit on the tree.
Fast forward to this year. A couple of months back, I was given the opportunity to pitch my business with two other young entrepreneurs on The Shrimp Tank show at the DECA convention in Gwinnett County in Georgia. There were about 500 high school students who have a passion and desire to enter the world of marketing and my presentation was in front of all of them and three judges from the show. I was giddy at just the very thought of being in a room with so many people who share my same passions career-wise. The presentation went great and the night was definitely one to remember. Such a wonderful opportunity.
Yesterday, I spent the morning and afternoon working on a project with the most amazing ad agency I have ever seen. I left more confident in my dreams than I have ever been before. I realized that what I do and the way my brain works is similar to how the Chief Creative Officer’s brain works and if that didn’t inspire me, I don’t think anything in my career could! This opportunity, to work with an expert in the field on possibly one of the biggest campaigns of my life, is one of my favorite moments on this journey so far.
Later yesterday evening, we went to the post wrap up session and follow up for The Shrimp Tank. We were live on Business Radio X in Atlanta. I got to speak live on the radio for the first time in my life and it was all about my business, entrepreneur life, and my thoughts on various topics within the business world. If you had told me this time last year that I would own and operate a marketing business, that I would be spending the day with some of the most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders in this area, and that I would be talking on the radio about my business and work-home balance, I would have thought you were crazy. Absolutely crazy. But…behold the opportunity presented itself.
I am amazed at how quickly life can change. There are changes for the bad and changes for the good, but at the end of the day, God works things out for the good of those that love Him. It all boils down to having the faith to see an opportunity and run with it. The experiences I have had over the past year have radically changed how I interpret opportunities and my future career. It would be foolish to not seek every opportunity available to connect with leaders in the community and leaders in the marketing industry. It is such a gift to be a part of the business world and the last few days have reminded me how quickly opportunities come and how quickly life can change from one little opportunity. It all started with an idea and a little action to get the momentum going.
Friends, I encourage you today to seek new opportunities, to connect with leaders in your industry, and most importantly, to let go of your fears and excuses and run headstrong toward success. Just do it. The opportunities await you!
